Six Turkish soldiers killed, eight injured in mine blast in Southeast

ISTANBUL - Six Turkish soldiers were killed and eight others were injured when a landmine planted by the terrorist PKK exploded in the southeastern part of the country, the military said on Thursday. (UPDATED)

The blast occurred at 11:40 p.m. (GMT 20:40) on Wednesday when the soldiers' military vehicle struck a remotely controlled landmine on a road in the Cukurca district of the southeastern province of Hakkari, the Turkish military said in a statement posted on its website.

One of the injured was in serious condition, Hakkari Governor Muammer Turker said.

Turkish troops, backed by helicopters, launched an offensive near the Iraqi border against PKK terrorists after the blast, news agencies said.

It was the heaviest toll suffered by Turkish soldiers since a bomb explosion killed nine soldiers at the end of April.

The PKK, which launches cross-border attacks on Turkey from bases in northern Iraq and frequently uses remote-control landmines to target the country's security forces, is listed as a terrorist group by Turkey and much of the international community, including the EU and the United States

The robotic explorer has now found similar signs of past water in Victoria, a crater some 3.5 miles (6 kilometers) away.

Opportunity also spotted unique rock layers in the sides of Victoria Crater, which are likely the petrified remnants of ancient sand dunes.

The new findings confirm suspicions that water once shaped the Martian landscape on a regional scale instead of forming isolated oases, said rover project leader Steven Squyres of Cornell University in New York State.

"Given that we've seen the same stuff at places that are miles apart, it is a reasonable conjecture that those processes operated over most of this region," Squyres said.

Many scientists consider water to be a vital ingredient for life, Squyres noted.

Got the Job Done

The decision to send Opportunity down into Victoria Crater was one the rover team wrestled with for a long time in 2006.

Rough terrain leading into the crater could have damaged the aging probe's steering system or broken its wheels.

At the time, mission managers were worried that any damage would mean Opportunity would never make it back out of Victoria Crater.

But the risky maneuver has proved well worth it, Squyres said. Opportunity clambered safely out of the crater last August and is now trekking to Endeavor, an even larger crater some 8 miles (13.5 kilometers) away.

Energy GeneratioN

Efficient energy use, sometimes simply called energy efficiency, is using less energy to provide the same level of energy service. Efficiency often has taken a secondary position to new power generation as a solution to global warming in creating national energy policy. With companies people should conribute this solution. There are some steps to generate energy in our daily life.First, people should find out about your options for generating energy. For instance people can read about the different ways to generate your own energy on our renewable technologies pages and see which technologies might suit your daily life with our energy selector tool - coming soon. Second step is, You'll need to decide: which technology to use, what size system to install, which installer and products to use and how to pay for the installation. Whlie doing this stage you can see what products are available - research local suppliers and installers online and give them a call to find out more. After that you should decide what you will choose ; Electricity or heating. Depending on which you choose, there are other things to thing about; Electricity: is your home connected to the National Grid? If so, think about selling your own energy. If not, you'll need to research the best way to store electricity. Heating: is your current heating system compatible with the installation? Could you be more efficient with another type of system, such as under floor heating? Get opinions from a range of certified installers. Finally you should make your decision. The final details to nail down before you go ahead.you should make your daily need energy efficient by installing insulation, double glazing and draught-proofing - this will ensure you get the most out of your renewable technology. You should make sure you have warranties on your products and installation - it will add to your peace of mind and could cut your future costs. To find out more, talk to your installer. After your installation, you ought to check with your insurance provider to make sure your policy covers the changes to your home or work where you will make it and make any adjustments you need. Consequently you should learn how to use your new system - ask your installer to arrange a training or advice session. In my opinion Installing a renewable technology might seem like a challenge, but it's really no more complicated than any other home improvement. It should be everyplace where we live.

My favourite book is "The Secret"

The Secret is a best-selling 2006 New Age self-help and spirituality book written by Rhonda Byrne. A film based on the book was released shortly after the book in DVD format. The tenet of the book is that an individual's focused positive thinking can result in life-changing results such as increased wealth, health, happiness and more. The book achieved high sales after being featured in two episodes of Oprah, whereafter the book reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list and the film based on the book reached #1 on the sales charts on Amazon.com.

The book has also reached a high level of notoriety and criticism from those who claim that the book misleads readers with its claims of positive thinking being able to influence a reader's life and real-world outcomes.

The film is largely influenced by Wallace D. Wattles' 1910 book The Science of Getting Rich.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, born 5 February 1985) is a Portuguese footballer who plays as a winger for English Premier League club Manchester United and the Portuguese national team.

Ronaldo began his career as a youth player at Nacional and his successes with the team led to a move to Sporting CP two seasons afterwards. Ronaldo's precocious talent caught the attention of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and he signed the 18-year-old for £12.24 million in 2003. The following season, Ronaldo won his first club honour, the FA Cup, and reached the UEFA Euro 2004 final with Portugal, in which he scored his first international goal.

In 2008, Ronaldo won his first UEFA Champions League title, and was named the final's man of the match. He was named the FIFPro World Player of the Year and the FIFA World Player of the Year, in addition to becoming Manchester United's first Ballon d'Or winner in 40 years.

Ankara warns Turkish Cypriot election winner over peace talks

ISTANBUL - Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday warned the hardliners who won the Turkish Cypriot polls on divided Cyprus against breaking off or disrupting peace talks with the Greek Cypriots, AFP reported.

It would be very wrong for the new government to end the negotiations or to continue the negotiations on a basis different than the one that has been followed so far," Erdogan said in a speech to members of his party.

"The process must continue exactly as before ... We will never support a move that would weaken the hand" of Turkish Cypriot leader and chief negotiator Mehmet Ali Talat, he added in the televised speech during a group party meeting.

Erdogan was reacting to Dervis Eroglu, prime minister-elect of Turkish Cypriots, who has said the Cyprus reunification should be based on "two states" -- a framework rejected by the Greek Cypriots.

The hardline nationalist appeared to be referring to a loose federation between the Turkish Cypriot and the the Greek Cypriots.

Talat has been negotiating for a bi-zonal federation with Demetris Christofias, the Greek Cypriot leader, in U.N.-sponsored talks launched after a four-year hiatus.

The return of Eroglu and his National Unity Party to power in Sunday’s elections has raised concerns over the reunification negotiations, although he moved quickly to assure the international community the talks would continue.

Cyprus has been split since1964 when Turkish Cypriots were forced to withdraw into enclaves.

Turkish Cypriots overwhelmingly supported the U.N.-sponsored blueprint in the referendum held in 2004, when previous efforts collapsed after it was rejected by Greek Cypriots. The European Union has since pledged to implement a free trade regulation to ease the isolations on the Turkish community on the island.

The partition of Cyprus, an EU member, remains a major stumbling block for Turkey’s own bid to join the European Union.

Vitamins Are Important to Good Health
Some people fear they do not get enough vitamins from the foods they eat. So they take products with large amounts of vitamins.

Many jobs must be done with two people. One person takes the lead. The other helps. It is this cooperation that brings success.
So it is with the human body. Much of our good health depends on the cooperation between substances. When they work together, chemical reactions take place smoothly. Body systems are kept in balance.
Some of the most important helpers in the job of good health are the substances we call vitamins.

The word "vitamin" dates back to Polish scientist Casimir Funk in nineteen-twelve. He was studying a substance in the hull that covers rice. This substance was believed to cure a disorder called beriberi.
Funk believed the substance belonged to a group of chemicals known as amines. He added the Latin word "vita," meaning life. So he called the substance a "vitamine" -- an amine necessary for life.

Funk was not able to separate the anti-berberi substance from the rice hulls; it was later shown to be thiamine. Other studies found that not all vitamines were amines. So the name was shortened to vitamin. But Funk was correct in recognizing their importance.
Scientists have discovered fourteen kinds of vitamins. They are known as vitamins A, the B group, C, D, E and K. Scientists say vitamins help to carry out chemical changes within cells. If we do not get enough of the vitamins we need in our food, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases.

Experts agree that everyone needs vitamins so that their bodies can operate normally. In general, a complete diet should provide all the vitamins a body needs in their natural form. In addition, many foods and food products now have extra vitamins and minerals added.
Some people fear they do not get enough vitamins from the foods they eat. So they take products with large amounts of vitamins. They think these products, called vitamin supplements, will improve their health and protect against disease. Many adults now take vitamin supplements every day.
In two thousand six, medical experts gathered near Washington, D.C. to discuss studies about vitamin supplements. The experts found little evidence that most supplements do anything to protect or improve health. But they noted that some do help to prevent disease.
The experts said women who wish to become mothers should take folic acid to prevent problems in their babies. And, they said vitamin D supplements and calcium can protect the bones of older women.
